Reader’s POV

“Come on doll-face, no need to play hard to get.”

You woke up in cold sweats and your heart pounded with such force that it shook your entire body.  Your eyes strained to adjust to the sunlight as you breathed with quick, panicked gasps when you saw that you were hooked up to an IV.  You jumped when you felt a hand on your arm.

“Hey, hey, it’s okay (Name), I’m not going to hurt you,” a man in a chair next to you said in a gentle tone.  He had brown hair and a rather unique beard.  But it was the kind gaze of his warm brown eyes that seemed to calm you down a bit.

“H-how do you know my name?” you asked, frightened.

“Your necklace,” he said as he pointed to your neck, “It has your name on it.”

You looked down to see the locket that your parents had given you when you were a baby with your name inscribed on the front in elegant calligraphy.  You exhaled a sigh of relief, until you remembered the previous night’s events.

“The m-men… in the alley…” you asked next as your wild eyes searched the man for an answer.

“Oh, them?  I shot each of them with a homemade tranquilizing dart.  Let’s just say they probably won’t remember who they are and have one hell of a headache,” he reassured you with a slight smile.

Nonetheless, your eyes darted around the unfamiliar room that you were in as you took in your foreign surroundings.  It was a large bedroom with a fantastic view of the city, furnished with very expensive looking décor.  Where the hell were you?  When you tried to sit up, the room began to spin and a sharp pain shot up both your shoulders.

“I wouldn’t do that if I were you.  You had a concussion.  Not to mention your shoulders are pretty banged up too,” the man said as he eased you back down into the bed.

“Why am I not at the hospital then?” you retorted, your head still throbbing.

“’Cause the press would go crazy if they saw Iron Man dropping off a mystery girl at the hospital.  That would raise lots of questions, don’t you think?  Trust me you don’t want that kind of publicity.  So I called up my old friend Dr. Banner and had him treat you here,” he said casually, as if this was a regular thing for him.

Wait, did he say Iron Man?  Before you had the chance to question him further, he spoke again.

“Oh and by the way,” he grabbed a glass of water and an orange prescription pill bottle from the nightstand next to your bed, and then offered them to you.   “Doc said you should take two of these once you woke up.  I think it’s suppose to help with the pain.”

You were hesitant to except the medication.  You obviously weren’t thinking clearly at the time being, what with your concussion and the traumatizing events that had occurred.  However, you tried as best you could to gather your wits and assess your current predicament: You woke up in a house you did not know, with a man you did not know, who was offering you pills?!  For all you knew this guy could be a serial killer!  Oh, but you couldn’t help but think of how much your head was pounding and how badly your shoulders ached.  So, your condition seriously clouded your judgment because you snatched the medicine and water out of his hands while shooting him a skeptical look.  You read the label on the container, looked back at the man, then turned your gaze to the container once more, halfheartedly deciding that the medicine was legit.  You undid the cap, shook two pills out of the bottle into your palm, and held them close to your mouth with your head slightly tilted back.

“God, I really hope you’re not a serial killer,” you muttered to yourself before tossing the pills into your mouth and downing them with a single gulp of water.

“Excuse me?  I know you did not just call me a serial killer.  Is this the thanks I get for saving your life?” he questioned, pretending as if he was hurt by your comment.

This caught your attention.  Your head whipped around to face him as your brow furrowed and a very confused look took over your features.  “Y-you… saved me?” you spoke slowly and in a very soft voice with obviously much disbelief.  You should have guessed by now that he was your savior, but your mind was all over the place and you weren’t as sharp as your normal self.

“Sure did,” he answered you with a somewhat arrogant grin.

Then you began to notice that the more you looked at this man, the more you realized he looked vaguely familiar.

“Do I know you?” you asked him, still hopelessly lost and confused.  Not to mention you felt yourself gradually getting more and more tired.  You figured that the pills you took also made you drowsy.

His grin vanished.  “No, not at all,” he replied.  His response was suspiciously quick, but you didn’t even bother to notice because your eyelids were getting unbearably heavier.  The man must have noticed this because he stood up and began to walk towards the door.

“You should rest,” was all he said.

“Wait,” you managed to say just as he opened the door to leave.  He turned his head to look at you.

“I don’t even know your name,” you muttered as you felt yourself slipping into unconsciousness.

He smirked, but you were already asleep.

“Call me Tony.”
